- Alitalia canceled more than 100 flights (with other airlines serving Italy joining suit) in advance of an expected four-hour strike today by air traffic controllers.
Delta Air Lines will offer new daily scheduled service between New York/Kennedy to Ireland (Dublin and Shannon) and add daily flights from Atlanta to both cities next year.
Midwest Airlines will launch new nonstop flights between Kansas City and Tampa on Dec. 15, with more flights added as well between Kansas City and Fort Lauderdale.
American Eagle will start flying daily between San Juan and Vieques, Puerto Rico, on Dec. 16.
Royal Jordanian Airlines will join the oneworld airline alliance, partnering with Aer Lingus, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, LanChile, and Qantas Airways.
Traditionally, the fall travel season brings in the most profits for U.S. airlines. This year, though, U.S. carriers are on track to lose almost $1 billion during the third quarter, USA Today reports. The reasons include rising fuel prices, which may even lead to an unusual loss at JetBlue (which receives its jet fuel directly from sources in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region).
