Some Call Me ‘Gadget Girl’
by Penney Rudicil
OSSN Eastern Regional Manager

In the past few e-newsletters, we have discussed technology. Now, I think it is important to learn more about the products that can help us organize and manage our personal and professional lives. Most of us have a cell phone, a computer with email and Internet access, and many other electronic devices to make our lives more convenient, fun, and productive. Here are a few of the items that I find helpful:

Laptop Computer

Although I have a wonderful desktop computer, I have had a laptop for years. I am not going to go into specifics on the brands and features (because this is a personal choice). What I am going to talk about is why you may want to invest in a laptop. Our agency is known as "the travel store that comes to your door" -- and we pride ourselves on our customer service. We are available to meet our clients at their businesses or homes to discuss their travel plans -- a service that makes us very unique. I can close more sales on the spot because I can access the suppliers immediately and I don't have to call my clients back.

My laptop has wireless capabilities; however, wireless internet is not always available. Because of this, I will probably purchase a new device called a Cellular Broadband Access Card, which slides directly into the PCMCIA slot and provides Internet service through the same towers as your cell phone. You can choose between a national plan and a broadband plan (not all areas are broadband capable), starting for only $60 a month with unlimited access. This set-up would allow me to access the Internet and email while meeting with a client or while traveling.
