Can this Trip be Saved

The Case of the Broken Leg (and Budget!)

Question: "My parents were vacationing in Jamaica at an all-inclusive resort -- an anniversary present that my siblings and I gave them last Christmas. During this trip, my father fell on the steps leading from the resort's restaurant down to the beach, and he broke his hip.

"Because the injury was so severe, he could not use his existing commercial airline ticket to return home to the United States for treatment. In the end, we have to pay almost $20,000 for a medically equipped private jet to fly my mother and my father back to our hometown.

"After this expensive lesson, I'm wondering what steps we could have taken to avoid these costs?"

Answer: It's amazing that clients will spend so much more time planning the contents of their suitcases and arranging to board their pets and stop their newspaper delivery before a vacation -- when they almost never take time to prepare for the unexpected risks such as severe illness or injury during the trip!
