One day I was listening to a radio broadcast that actually changed my whole future outlook on building my business. The guest on the talk show happened to be the head of a job placement agency, and the discussion was about the high numbers of people out of work after the dot com crash. A caller looking for advice and compassion stated that she had been out of work for eight months with no luck whatsoever. The guest spoke up in a strong voice and said, “You are NOT out of work. You have a full-time, eight-hour-a-day job. That job is ‘looking for work.’ You have to get up, get dressed, and get out there by 9 a.m. and don’t stop until 5 p.m. or 6 p.m.”

It struck me immediately that this philosophy should also apply to my business. I could not complain about the lack of business, because it was my job to find work for myself. Boy, did this burn in my brain! So much so that, ever since this radio show, I have made it my number one priority to go out and constantly find ways to cultivate new business. It’s not enough just to take care of current clients or rely on word of mouth. To grow (or even just maintain) a business, there has to be an ongoing sales and marketing campaign using new and fresh ideas -- especially in the fiercely competitive environment of our travel industry.
