Can This Trip Be Saved?

Question: Last Christmas, I saw lots of TV coverage from airports showing thousands of suitcases, garment bags, and boxes stacked up due to flight delays and cancellations. I know that, on most normal days, the vast majority of checked luggage on the airlines will make it to the end of each flight, safe and sound.

However, here's what I'm wondering: What prevents security screeners, baggage handlers, and other airport employees from pilfering checked bags and pocketing valuables?

Answer: You hit the good news already: Most flights on every day of the year in the United States end with the luggage on board being successfully reunited with the correct passengers.
