Can This Trip Be Saved: Overbooked Hotel Rooms

Question: In November 2005, my brother
and his wife booked two hotel rooms (one for themselves and another
for my wife and me) at a hotel in Orlando for May 2006 for our annual
vacation. We guaranteed both reservations with our credit cards.
This week, we got a letter in the mail from the hotel's
front desk manager stating that the property was unfortunately oversold
for the week we had reserved. In other words, our reservation was
being canceled! The hotel didn't offer any compensation or assistance,
other than a visitor's guide to Orlando enclosed with the letter
that listed other hotels in the city.
Despite numerous calls to the front desk manager and
other employees at the hotel, no one wants to help us any further
- and, now, our vacation is ruined. What can we do?
