Avoid ‘Surprise’ Credit Card and Currency Fees

A
harried business executive recently booked an overseas sales trip
with an online travel site instead of his local travel agent --
and, not surprisingly, he ran into problems toward the end of the
trip.
Before he left home, he’d guaranteed the online
hotel reservation with his corporate credit card, and he printed
the travel Web site’s confirmation that showed the price of
the room in U.S. dollars. When he checked out of his room, however,
the hotel's front desk insisted that he must pay in the local currency
-- at an exchange rate that was less favorable to him than that
day's current exchange rate quoted in the local newspapers! In other
words, the attractive online rate that he thought he had guaranteed
in U.S. dollars went right out the window.
