Selling Cruises: New England and Canada -- The
‘New Alaska’
by John Hawks
Once
upon a time, taking a cruise along the coast of New England and
Canada appealed primarily to senior "leaf peepers" who
wanted to see the region's spectacular fall foliage colors without
the hassles of driving their own cars or taking a motorcoach tour
in the process.
These days, seasoned cruise industry executives
call New England and Canada "the new Alaska,"
because new cruise lines have moved into serving the region, nearby
ports have revamped their tourism offerings to appeal to cruisers,
and the climate makes for a longer cruising season than the 49th
state can provide (May through the end of October, whereas most
cruise lines end their Alaska programs in late September).
