Travel as a Second Career
by Dolores Samms, MCC

Recently, I have received several emails from early retirees asking for my advice:

Do you recommend my starting with a host agency? If yes, which host agency do you recommend? How should I enter the travel industry? Do you have the requirements for starting a travel agency? I am going to retire soon and I think that I would like to start a home based travel agency because I like to travel, what should I do?

My response to all of the above questions is simple: Contact your community education center (Community College, Adult Education Center, etc.) and find out if they have a travel agent program. If you know nothing about the career or industry you are seeking to enter, then education is the key. Once you have taken the basic classes, you are then able to communicate with (talk the talk and walk the walk) a variety of host agencies and/or travel personnel to ask intelligent questions.
