This year, millions of travelers will plan their vacations with images of sandy beaches, tropical drinks, and day after day of warm sunshine in the mix. However, a growing number of cruisers will opt instead for parkas and shore excursions aboard Zodiac boats and the chance that they might literally find themselves stuck in the ice at the bottom of the world.

Last year, more than 10,000 intrepid visitors cruised near Antarctica, a destination that has been open to tourism for only the past 40 years or so. No humans live as permanent residents on this seventh continent of the world. That isolation makes Antarctica the perfect destination for these travelers, as they seek to experience the last truly isolated corner of the globe.
