Travel Insurance: Worth the Expense?

Recently, as I sat on the Texas Gulf Coast watching Hurricane Ike rake over Cuba and set a path that appeared to be bringing him right over the piece of Texas where the chair in which I was sitting is located, I wondered about the thousands of people who had cruises and other vacations scheduled for the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.
I had a fairly high level of anxiety, as I anticipated a mandatory evacuation order telling me I'd have to scamper off to the Texas Hill Country. It’s not just the inconvenience of the thing, but also the expense. There is the cost of fuel; the cost of lodging; the cost of housing; and all the other cost associated with the evacuation.
