 Last month, United Airlines announced plans to begin forcing selected U.S. travel agencies to absorb the carrier's credit card costs for tickets. The airline notified an unknown number of agencies to begin reporting their United ticket sales as cash starting July 20 and using the agencies' own merchant account to process clients' credit card bookings.
Obviously, this new policy is devastating for these agencies. And, down the road, it will have a huge negative impact on even small home-based agencies that don't book air directly. United is testing the waters to see if it can shift its credit card expenses onto agents - and, if it succeeds, other airlines (and other travel suppliers) will likely follow suit.
