I remember going to Las Vegas for the first time back in the late 60s. A desert town out in the middle of nowhere that had a lot of glitz and glamour. I have returned to Las Vegas many times since then and was always amazed at the phenomenal growth of this desert city.
Going to the desert in the United Arab Emirates of Dubai reminded me somewhat of Las Vegas, but Dubai was a city I found to be on steroids with a goal to be the vacation Mecca of the world. The UAE is considered the second richest Arab country after Qatar. The country has just under 10 percent of the world's proven oil resources. It is expected that, by 2010, oil will account for less that 1 percent of GDP. Dubai’s rulers have known for many years that the oil would run out, and so they have embarked on ambitious projects to diversify the emirate’s economy:
